Our High Calling

The Scripture refers to our new life in Christ as a high and holy calling. Ephesians refers to this calling as "the" mystery that from the beginning of the world has been hidden in God. And then there is the word "elect" which is used 16 times in the new testament and describes how one receives this high and holy calling - he/she is elect or chosen by God for this high and holy calling which is also known as Salvation.

To understand the greatness of our Salvation we have to see that God loved us prior to the foundation of the World. Even before our creation, our loving Heavenly Father knew us, loved us, and chose to save us. This is one of the greatest truths in all of Scripture for in it we see a love that is not of this world. We see One choosing to forgive, restore, and heal, and choosing to love us with an eternal, and life giving love.

God's purpose, His stated will for His people is that they be conformed to Christ. He predestined (before Creation) that His people be holy, without blame, and to love Him. This is His will for every believer and this is our high and holy calling. We have different gifting's but only one calling and that calling is to be conformed to Christ.

We may think the goal of our Salvation is eternal life, or heaven. But that is not true. Heaven is about God and about being in His presence for eternity and if we are not conformed to Christ then heaven would not be a blessing; apart from Christ we would have no heart for the eternal presence of God.

Prior to Creation God purposed to have a people who would be holy and who would love Him; He accomplished this eternal purpose through Christ Jesus. Jesus defeated the power and bondage of sin for us. The Father joins His elect to Christ, gives them the Spirit and Nature of Christ, imputes to them a perfect righteousness, and then fills their heart with the love of Christ. He then leads His chosen people to a life of holy living.

You may say "is this really possible?" Yes, it is not only possible but the only way one can be saved. If God does not empower us for Salvation then we cannot be saved. We lack the resources - the will, the heart, and the love necessary to live a life of love for God. It is only through the indwelling power and sanctifying work of Christ that any person can be saved.

Even Christ is referred to as "elect". 1Peter 2:6 refers to Christ as the chief cornerstone, "elect" and precious. Christ is not elect to salvation but He is elect or chosen to save us. He is chosen by God for the specific purpose of redeeming a people to God. According to Hebrews, Christ, through His blood, in His elect role as High Priest, provided an eternal redemption that perfects forever God's people who have been chosen for salvation. In addition, Christ in His role as High Priest, becomes the "surety" or guarantor of our Salvation. In other words, the ministry of Christ is to provide a sure and eternal Salvation that will not fail for the redeemed of God.

Isaiah speaks of the power of God to provide and care for His people from the beginning of their life to the end. Isa 46:4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Philippians 1:6 speaks of God's power to finish the good work He has begun in you! Php 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

To summarize, our high and holy calling is to be conformed to Christ. Prior to Creation God chose and called us for this very purpose. It is a high calling because it is the very reason for our existence and the priority of our life. There is only one priority and everything else falls in place under this calling.

Our calling to be conformed to Christ is also a holy calling. It is holy because God is holy, Christ is holy, we are called to be holy, and Christ is making us holy. He is God in the flesh and He has chosen to make His home in our heart. He "fellowships" with us but it is a holy fellowship for at the center is the holy nature of God.

God bless you,
