Dead to Sin, Alive to God Part 5
Rom 6:10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.
Rom 6:11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
How to Stop Sinning
Some say they are powerless to stop sinning, that regardless of how hard they try they always fall back into their sinful behavior. But this is not a Gospel truth for by the work of Christ we are given power over sin. We are explicitly told that sin will not be our master for we are not under law but under grace.
Rom 6:14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Our Victory Over Sin is Multi-Dimensional
First, we have victory over death which is the penalty of sin.
Second, we have victory over the guilt of our sins because Jesus, in making atonement for our sins, became guilty for us.
Third, we have power over sinful behavior through the indwelling Holy Spirit.
These victories are true for every single born-again Christian and they are true from the first day of our conversion. It is true that we have to learn how to live out these victories, but nevertheless, it is the privilege of every single born-again Christian, from day one of their conversion to have complete and total victory over all sin, and over every spiritual enemy. This does not mean we will never sin but the work of Christ puts us on a new road, a new way of righteous living and we are forever changed. Before Christ, we were ruled by sin, but now, the bondage of sin is forever broken and the life of Christ is forever at work within us.
Our Mortal Body
Even though we are a New Creation and have died to sin, we are told our mortal body and its physical/emotional appetites are the focus of sin. Because of this tension, every Christian is given the responsibility to manage their mortal body/emotions for godliness.
Four Important Truths
- Do not let sin reign in your mortal body/mind.
- Do not yield the members of your body/mind to sin.
- Yield the members of your body/mind as instruments of righteousness to God.
- Yield yourselves (body/mind) to God as you are alive from the dead.
God is Our Strength
The ability to take these actions is given to us by our new birth; the death of Christ has defeated both the power of sin and our sinful standing before God. We are now joined to the resurrected Christ and His resurrection is our guarantee of victory over sinful behavior. Our new life consists in taking the promises and power of God, which are given to us through Christ, and then walking out His redemptive victories over every sin and every spiritual enemy.
Thoughts and Emotions
We have to remember that our thoughts/emotions are electro-chemical processes and therefore belong to our physical body. We are told to renew our mind which will then give us the power to control our behavior. If we do not learn to manage our thoughts and feelings, then we will never learn to prevent our body from being exploited by the Spirit of this world. Listen to Romans 12:1-2
Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteous
Yield means to ‘stand beside’. To yield is a command and it means you take yourself and stand it (body and mind) beside God; you take the responsibility for your mortal body including your mind and emotions and make sure they live out Christ's redemptive victories. We are to live a new life as one alive from the dead.
The members of our body are the individual parts, the processes, the desires, the appetites, etc.. God says take them all, individually, and as a whole, and bring them to me. Present them to me that they may be used for righteous purposes. I have empowered you, I have enabled you and no power can stop you from presenting yourself to Me. Sin will not have dominion over your for you are not under law but under grace!
If a person wants to change their behavior then the counsel of God is plain: present yourselves – your mind, your thoughts, your emotions, and your individual parts to Him as instruments of righteousness. Every born-again Christian is given this power for you are joined to Christ and His power is within you.
God bless you,
