Dead to Sin, Alive to God, Part 1

Rom 6:10-11
(10) For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
(11) Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We Are to see Ourselves as Dead to Sin

The Scripture is very clear on how we are to see ourselves. It says we are to see ourselves as dead to sin and alive to God. But how are we to do this? The Scripture uses the word "reckon", and it means to count something to be so. The word "reckon" can be a source of confusion because if we have to "reckon" something to be so, then it must not be substantially true.

Are We Really Dead to Sin?

How can we be honest, and clear thinking, and see ourselves as dead to sin when very clearly we continue to struggle with sin. Reckoning can seem to be a religious scheme of sorts, a kind of a make believe kind of faith, i.e. calling yourself presently dead when you really don't see how that can be true.

Every Christian is Dead to Sin and Alive to God

God is the One who said we are dead to sin and He is the One who used the word reckon. From this we know being dead to sin and alive to God is real and not a scheme. Death to sin is fundamental to the Gospel, and in fact, if we are not dead to sin, then we are not saved. If death to sin is not substantially true then there is no Gospel, no Salvation, and the Cross is of no benefit at all. If we are not, in fact, dead to sin then Christ died for nothing.

The Language of Scripture is Clear

The language of Scripture is explicit; we are to reckon ourselves dead indeed unto sin and alive to God. Why does the Scripture use that language, why do we have to reckon ourselves as anything? Why can't we just be dead to sin and be done with it. The answer is that we are dead to sin through the death of another Person. If we became dead to sin through our own death then we would not have to reckon it so, but since our death is a gift, we have to receive it or reckon it so.

Death to Sin is Not Something We Can Do

It is important to know that on day one of our conversion we are made dead to sin. It is not something we accomplish as we go. We don't become dead to sin by good living but we begin our new life dead to sin, before there any good living at all. Every single born-again Christian, on the very first day of their conversion, by their union with Christ, is made dead to sin and alive to God.

We Reckon It So!

We "reckon" ourselves dead to sin because it is substantially true, meaning the substance of our death is found in the physical death of Jesus Christ. There has been a literal, physical death, and that death has been put to our account. If you are a follower of Christ, then God sees you as having died with Christ. Because you are joined to Christ, He sees you as dead to sin but alive to Him in the Person of Jesus Christ. He does not see your life apart from Jesus Christ but He sees you as crucified with Christ, buried with Him, and then joined to Christ in His resurrection. He sees you as a New Creation, created in, and joined to, Jesus Christ. He sees His Son with favor and He sees, with the same favor, those who are joined to His Son.

Believe it friend, our death to sin is real. It is not imagination, it is not fantasy, it is not mysticism, and it is not just a doctrinal position. It is real forĀ  Jesus is the substance of our death; since He died a real death God says that we are dead to sin and to "reckon" it so!

We Are to See Ourselves With God's Eyes!

If we are to live and be strong in faith, we have to see ourselves with God's eyes. Christ is the sure foundation upon which we build our lives and the truths of the Gospel give us the power to live out the redemptive victories of Christ. We are a new creation, created in Christ Jesus; old things are passed away, and behold, all things become new!

God bless you.
